President Barack Obama addressed congress and the nation on February 24th and delivered a hard-hitting message about our weakening economy. The president spoke clearly about how our economic situation did not form overnight, but over decades of bad choices in administration.
Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stood firmly behind the president, applauding several moving statements. Some may have called it sweet-talking, but I think President Obama knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s not promising major rapid changes in the amount of money we have at our disposal, nor a quick fill-up of the national deficit. Only proof that his plan could work for the better.
Vice President Biden is in charge of the economic stimulus effort because, “Nobody messes with Joe.” Apparently he’s a hard guy.
It seems as though President Obama has some sort of head on his shoulders. Not only does he acknowledge how slow recovery might be, but he even points out that some Americans may be annoyed with his decision. That, to me, is a man worthy of running our country.
To those who are in opposition to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus bill), it may seem like Mr. Obama is using the economy as a crutch. But if the rich are so concerned with being taxed more and those struggling with making reasonable livings are speaking out, there’s no reason for the president to not focus on that. That’s his job, to recognize the vexations of his people and act on them.
Speech-making isn’t easy and President Obama delivers his expertly. He carries his head high above disapproving eyes and touches upon all issues that his citizens care about. The economy’s recession is always at the top of President Obama’s list, but this time it was for good reason.
One of the more likeky reasons why Mr. Obama was elected was because of his intellectual vibrancy and ability to relate to the average American. Some may think he’s taxing the rich just to spite them, but it’s a step in the right direction in my humble opinion. The point of it is to stimulate the economy by re-distributing wealth a little more fairly and evenly.
Some of the wealthy say they’d like to give back on their own and not have the government force them. But will they really donate to the people who need it when they need it if the government doesn’t give them a nudge? If you ask me, Mr. Obama knows exactly what he’s in for and he explains that in his address.
The American people who elected Mr. Obama did not do so for naught. Every one of them believed that he could do something helpful about our economy, and he appears to be doing just that. Even if the stimulus package doesn’t provide immediate relief for struggling families, at least our president’s doing something to *try* to curb our worsening economy.
Through criticism, President Obama will do what he can for the country he loves and is now in charge of.
