I might have been mistaken Sunday night watching the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, but I thought I was watching an award show. I was under the impression that I’d be seeing multiple talented artists receiving the due accolades.
What we got were boatloads of mediocre performances that did nothing for the night except fill up space. The only exceptions to this were the benefit performance for Haiti and the tribute to Michael Jackson.
And who would win the biggest award of the night but country bumpkin Taylor Swift.
I’m not sure if it’s just me, but years ago the Album of the Year award went to artists who had been working their talented butts off for years and had to lose to other artists. Nomination is the first step, winning is the next. To cap the night off for Taylor, she got to perform with a legend, Stevie Nicks.
This isn’t to say Taylor Swift isn’t talented at all. Besides, Beyoncé won more awards than Taylor, she just didn’t take home the Grammy gem.
But even that award was overshadowed by the numerous performances. Beyoncé lit up the stage as usual with a soulful yet daring rendition of “If I Were A Boy.” Another signature show was Pink’s high-flying act when she performed “Glitter in the Air.”
She lit up and wet up the Grammy crowd and wowed everyone in attendance. Although we’ve seen Pink in the air like a trapeze artist before, more rare was her flesh-tone and sparkling ensemble. Twitter was in overdrive with Pink trending topics.
Beyoncé was the biggest winner of the night, taking home six awards including Song of the Year for ‘one of the greatest videos of all time,’ “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”
The Zac Brown Band took the Best New Artist award, and Kings of Leon was awarded the Record of the Year for “Use Somebody.” Even Lady Gaga got a few accolades for Best Electronic/Dance Album for The Fame and Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face.”
At the end of the night, it was just a good thing Kanye West was no where to be seen.
