“Twilight” is a phenomenon that is surpassed only by Harry Potter. It was a hit before the films released, but with the addition of Taylor Lautner’s unmatched physique it was only a matter of time before they took over the big screen.
The first film in the ever-growing franchise swept the MTV Movie Awards in 2009, and this year was no different. Best Movie was just the tip of the ice berg for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” — which is saying something.
Global Superstar was a new category this year, and who would take home the golden popcorn for this one but Robert Pattinson. Rob also took home Best Male Performance and Best Kiss with Kristen Stewart.
Getting away from vampires and werewolves, Sandra Bullock made a surprise appearance to accept the MTV Generation award. With a montage of her clips from career and impact in the world of film, Sandra was a bright spot on a sloppy and mediocre night.
Aziz Ansari only made matters worse as host for the night. Chris Rock and MTV was always a bad combination (he also made an appearance) but Aziz took comedy to an entirely different — and bad — level. He only told one good Edward vs. Jacob joke, which isn’t saying much because “Twilight” was asking for one or two controversial hits.
The lesser awards don’t get much love, but you can’t discuss the Movie Awards without mentioning some of the classics. Tom Felton nabbed the golden popcorn for Best Villain for his role as Draco Malfoy in the sixth Harry Potter installment, and BeyoncĂ© and Ali Larter won the award for Best Fight in “Obsessed.”
“The Hangover” didn’t quite get the glory, but Ken Jeong did take home the Best WTF Moment award for popping out of a trunk. Newcomer Zach Galifianakis also got some props for “The Hangover” for Best Comedic Performance. Amanda Seyfried, who is also hot right now, took home Best Scared-As-S**t Performance for “Jennifer’s Body.”
Best Breakout Star also gave a tiny shout out to “Twilight,” awarding Anna Kendrick (who plays Bella’s friend Jessica) for her role in “Up in the Air” with George Clooney. Did I mention Kristen Stewart took home Best Female Performance? Too bad Taylor Lautner got left hanging.
Let’s not forget about upcoming mega movies. The Twilight Saga continues in a big way with the third installment coming to theaters on June 30, and the final chapter in the Harry Potter series opens in November. “The Karate Kid” is also being milked for all its hype is worth, and “The Last Airbender” will also hit the big screen this summer.
We’ll see you next year, MTV.
