Black star power shines at 2010 BET Awards

Black star power was alive and well at the 2010 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by Queen Latifah, the ceremony opened with a comeback performance by none other than Kanye West.

I guess BET likes taking chances.

Thankfully Kanye was on his best behavior — unlike the host herself. Queen Latifah returned to her roots, reminding us that her stardom began in hip hop. Let’s not forget “Set it Off,” when Latifah played the formidable Cleo.

Yes, The Queen donned a wig of cornrows, worker boots and shades on stage.

Nicki Minaj was the big winner of the night, taking home three awards. Minaj reined in Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Best New Artist (beating out Justin Bieber) and Best Group with Young Money.

Other winners included Alicia Keys for Best Female R&B Artist and Best Collaboration for “Empire State of Mind” with Jay-Z. Drake also got some love, taking home Best Group with Young Money and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Trey Songz won Best Male R&B Artist, and the Viewer’s Choice award ending up with Rihanna and Young Jeezy for “Hard.”

Sports and acting achievement is also acknowledged at the BET Awards. LeBron James won Subway Sportsman of the Year, and Serena Williams won Subway Sportswoman of the Year. Never mind that James doesn’t have a team yet for the fall basketball season.

“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” took home Best Movie, and Mo’Nique grabbed Best Actress for her supporting role in the same film. Idris Elba nabbed Best Actor as well.

John Legend was honored with the Humanitarian Award for his efforts in South Africa, and Monica won the Centric Award. But perhaps the most anticipated award of the night was Prince’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A collage of his best work and most popular performances and videos flashed across the screen, followed by a honorary performance of “I Adore” by Alicia Keys.

As long as young stars continue to flourish, BET will always honor them for their work. The BET Awards entertains and celebrates the careers and lives of those who influenced the industry of music, movies and sports the most.

Who knows what next year’s awards will bring?
