Anyone remember these words: “You need to give it up / Had about enough / It’s not hard to see the boy is mine”? If you know anything about late ’90s R&B you know this classic song by Brandy and Monica, “The Boy Is Mine.”
A follow up song has been a long time coming and the duo are finally letting us hear their blended voices again. This brand new track is called “It All Belongs To Me.”
The beat flows nicely and their voices work as well together as they did 14 years ago. The biggest difference is “The Boy Is Mine” verses were more back and forth. “It All Belongs To Me” is a coming together song, uniting the two for the cause.
“I know ya mad / Can’t take no more / But put that back, that ain’t yours” are a few lyrics from the chorus. They also shout out Facebook, bringing things into the new millennium.
Their voices are a lot deeper than in 1998 and because of that it’s harder to tell their voices apart, but Monica still sounds a little more tenor. The chorus is mostly Brandy again, but Monica’s vocals are essential to the completion of the melody. It’s also a bit more soulful because there’s less bass and structure than in “The Boy Is Mine.”
“It All Belongs To Me” is set to appear on Monica’s new album New Life, due April 10. A music video is also scheduled to be shot on February 13. It appears that, with this comeback, “it all belongs” to Brandy and Monica!
