It’s been quite a long time coming but Justin Bieber is back in effect! For months now he’s been hard at work in the studio, locked down in his office working on what could possibly be his best material yet.
You know the drill; track-by-track analysis.
1. All Around The World | 9.5/10
If this song doesn’t make you want to shake it all over the dance floor then I’m not sure what will. The beat hardly slows down! Bieber’s voice is sultry and exciting at the same time, giving you chills while you’re moving your feet, hips and everything else. The lyrics are quite sweet (“All around the world people want to be loved”), so you’ll be moving your body and feeling it in your heart. Don’t forget, Ludacris helps him out with a verse here as well.
2. As Long As You Love Me | 11/10
NO DOUBT BEST song on the record…I would say by far but there are so many good ones it’s hard to put it that way. The beat is out of this world; not too fast but just enough to get you moving (I’ve learned the chorus choreography, don’t judge me). The vibe it creates is just incredible. The concept is amazing too, making it clear money won’t take care of everything in your life (“As long as you love me, we could be starvin’, we could be homeless, we could be broke / As long as you love me I’ll be your platinum, I’ll be your silver, I’ll be your gold”). This one will make you dance and give you even more chills than the first track! Let’s not overlook the fact that rapper and Detroit native Big Sean lends his skills in a flawless verse. If you don’t like this one…there may not be much on the album for you.
3. Boyfriend | 10/10
We got this one a while ago so we all know how I feel about it. The beat = crazy. Justin’s voice = MY GOODNESS. The hook = so ridiculously catchy it shouldn’t be legal. How could a guy explain any more accurately why he should be your boyfriend? (“Tell me what you like, yeah, tell me what you don’t”). This one adds a perfect amount of flare to the album.
4. Catching Feelings | 8.5/10
This is the first track that really slows it down and takes Justin’s voice up just a few octaves. The chorus is a bit choppy for me but it still flows sweetly. Who doesn’t know what it’s like, getting butterflies in your stomach with the boy or girl you like? That nervousness is captured so well in the lyrics (We were best of friends since we were this high / So why do I get nervous every time you walk by?”). Get the lighter ready for this one, the melody will have you swaying.
5. Take You | 9.5/10
We’re speeding it back up with this one! Justin’s deep vocals are ready to hit us again too. The concept is pretty simple; it almost sounds like he’s trying to convince a girl he’s different and she should take a chance to get to know him (“I’m just tryna make a little conversation / Why the hesitation?”). The chorus is up-beat while the verses flow a little slower. Definitely a good jam for a tour.
6. Right Here | 9.5/10
Justin brings Young Money in on this one with Drake’s soft vocals. The beat is classic R&B almost and the drums are crisp as ever. This isn’t necessarily one that’s gonna get you up booty-popping; it’s more of an easy-going cocktail party song laced with smooth R&B. This is an excellent example of a departure from his ‘bubble gum’ (if you will) beats and lyrics of old.
7. Fall | 9.5/10
Here is where we start getting emotional. He doesn’t quite slow it down, but the lyrics will tug at your heart a bit. And listen to what his manager, Scooter Braun, said about an interesting video concept they have for it! Apparently it was inspired by “A Walk To Remember.”
8. Die In Your Arms | 9/10
This one has a major old school Motown vibe. If you love classic MJ this will no doubt tickle your fancy. The chorus is smooth and sultry with a pretty simple concept to boot (“Honestly the truth is / If I could just die in your arms, I wouldn’t mind”). It’s got enough beat to keep you moving but you won’t run out of breath in the process.
9. Thought Of You | 8/10
We’re back to a fast-paced beat here but it’s still sweet. Being in love with the idea of someone is nothing new and for teenagers it resonates even louder. (“So clear to me now / can’t explain what you’re doin’ to me, yeah”). This is a simple song but it packs a punch!
10. Beauty and a Beat 9/10
We’re back to the club beats with this one! And would you expect anything less from a Nicki Minaj cameo? This has enough bass for the club but it’s tame enough for your 15-year-old’s birthday party. (“We gonn party like it’s 3012 tonight / I wanna show you all the finer things in life”). Even with the crazy beat Justin’s vocals stay smooth. And it wouldn’t be complete without Nicki’s quirky drawl and lyrics (“Buns out, wiener / but I gotta keep a eye out for Selen-ur”). It’ll get you bobbing your head before you can say “body rock!”
11. One Love | 8.5/10
This song immediately brought me to late ’90s pop; the days of Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees. Its beat is fun and rather bubbly and Justin’s voice is sweet yet mature. The imagery you get from the lyrics is pure fantasy (“All I wanna do is dance under the moon / ‘Cause all I need is one love). For those fans who miss his old style of sensitive and sweet songs will love this one to death.
12. Be Alright | 10/10
Now here is where we get deep. This song is completely acoustic and may get you a little choked up (insert tissue disclaimer here). Justin has said a couple different things about the inspiration for this one, but it’s really for anyone. The lyrics speak a lot of different volumes (“Through the sorrow and the fights / Don’t you worry, ’cause everything’s gonna be all right” / “You know that I care for you, I’ll always be there for you”). He’s performed this one several times and you’re made of stone if you don’t feel a little something. Heartache won’t exist when you listen to this one. Headphones in. Volume up. Ignore the world. This song is THAT song.
13. Believe | 10/10
And here we have the song for the Beliebers! Even the ones who haven’t been there every step of the way, though the ones who have will feel even more. Get more tissues ready, this is another one that’ll have you an emotional wreck. Of all that Justin’s had to deal with, he said he fans have gotten him through a lot of tough times (“There were days when I was just broken / There were nights when I was doubtin’ myself / But you kept my heart from fallin'”). But what does he say? Dream big, rise above. Work hard. Focus on the positive. (“It didn’t matter how many times I got knocked on the floor”). If you’re not a fan, you may wanna avoid this one. But even then, you can’t deny what he has with Beliebers is special.
This is just the original version; I highly recommend checking out the others on the deluxe. “Out Of Town Girl” is another bass knocker, showing Justin’s mature side again. “She Don’t Like The Lights” has a techno club beat almost with lyrics that are sweet and make you think. And of course there’s the infamous “Maria,” another MJ-esqe track that lets Justin get a few things off his chest about a certain woman claiming she had his baby (“I’m talkin’ to you, Maria!” This is an actual line from the song, by the way).
But wait, there’s more! If you buy the deluxe version of Believe on ITUNES you can get another exclusive track, “Love Me Like You Do.” Be warned, parents of the little ones; this one isn’t for them. It’s mature Bieber at its finest. And tread softly, older ladies; an 18-year-old is about to send shivers up your spine.
If you pre-ordered the album from Ticketmaster when purchasing tickets for his highly anticipated Believe Tour this fall you’ll get yet ANOTHER track, “Hey Girl.” This is another one not necessarily for the kiddies, as the bass picks up again and Justin is basically rapping the whole way through. It’s rather short but sweet enough to repeat to make up for its lack of length.
But even that’s not all! There’s a bonus track on the Swedish version entitled “Fairytale” with Jaden Smith that brings so much fantasy to mind it’s ridiculous. There is also a Japanese bonus track called “Just Like Them,” a snazzy number with a funky beat. Justin does the old school vibe justice; take note ’80s babies.
Check this album out because it is, for lack of a better phrase, amazingly perfect. Even if you’re not a fan just listen to the songs he has to offer and judge him on THAT. Everyone has their own taste, but give it a chance. With so many amazing songs and guest appearances there’s bound to be something you like. It’s all about the music.
