Teens everywhere screamed in unison: “YOU JUST DON’T GET IT!”
Subconsciously, they meant they were tired of waiting for Justin Bieber to show his face on stage.
Of course with Selena Gomez & The Scene, Taylor Lautner, Tom Felton and Justin Bieber all slated to make appearances, the 2011 Teen Choice Awards was one anticipated night of events. Host Kaley Cuoco opened the show with several quirky jokes about celebrity audience members, which was incredibly cheesy seeing as that’s what all the hosts are doing these days.
The number of categories was too high to present all on stage, but several lucky guys and gals were able to get their acceptance speech on. Blake Lively won Choice TV Actress: Drama for her role in “Gossip Girl” Robert Pattinson actually picked up a non-Twilight related award; Choice Movie Actor: Drama for “Water for Elephants.”
That’s not to say Twilight got no love. Taylor Lautner, who also presented, won the Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy surfboard for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene won Choice Movie Scene Stealer: Male and Female respectively.
But Harry Potter out-shined them for the first time in who knows how long. It took home Choice Liplock (Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson), Choice Movie Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy (Emma Watson), Choice Movie Villain (Tom Felton), and Choice Summer Movie. But the biggest victory was Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, which Potter took over Twilight. Cue tears from Twi-Hards.
Tom Felton and Rupert Grint were in attendance to accept Potter’s surfboards, and they even brought Daniel Radcliffe in on the action from New York via satellite. They also had an emotional send-off tribute to Potter, compiled of classic lines, scenes and snippets from the past 10 years of witchcraft and wizardry.
And what would an award show be without the two lovebirds on top of the world, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. Selena performed her new single “Love You Like A Love Song,” complete with her beau and the subject of the song singing along in the audience (cue fangirl swoons). Selena Gomez & The Scene picked up a few awards of their own; Choice Group, Choice Single for “Who Says” and Choice Love Song for…well, you know which. Selena herself also nabbed Choice Female Hottie.
Toward the end of the night, the Biebs himself finally graced the stage to accept his four awards: Choice Male Artist, Choice TV Villain for CSI, Choice Male Hottie and Choice Twit (whatever that is; I thought it was tweet?).
Other winners included Cameron Diaz for “Bad Teacher” in the Choice Movie Actress: Comedy category, and Ashton Kutcher took home Choice Movie Actor: Romantic Comedy for “No Strings Attached.” His acceptance speech included a stunning rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” in which he got the crowd involved. He looked a little baked but no one’s judging. Side note; Ellen DeGeneres won Choice Comedian over Jimmy Fallon.
As per usual for an award show, special achievement awards went out to special people for doing extra special things. Demi Lovato was honored with the Acuvue Inspiration Award, thanking all of her supporters in her acceptance speech. Taylor Swift won the Ultimate Choice Award and she simply couldn’t go up on stage to accept until she hugged Justin Bieber (for the record, she hugged Selena first). Swift also won Choice Female Artist, Choice Female Country Artist, Choice Country Track for “Mean” and Choice Break-Up Song for “Back to December.”
I suppose the real question is what’s gonna happen with the TCAs next year? Will Justin and Selena be engaged yet or will it be too early? Will there be a new teen sensation for them to go gaga over? How many awards will Twilight win? And what color will the surfboard trophies be? We’ll find out in due time.
